This week we meet Jennifer Close!
What drew you to your current vocation?
I was born and raised a Milford resident and have so much pride for our town! I currently am a school counselor and certified life coach for Teens and Young Adults. I always knew I wanted to work within the education system but wasn’t sure in what capacity. A year after graduating from high school, I was asked to take over the high school cheerleading program. While building the relationships and rapport with the girls, I knew I wanted to forever be a mentor and coach. I pursued a Master’s degree in school counseling and have been working as a counselor for almost 10 years. I have since expanded my career to be a certified life coach, helping young adults reach their fullest potential. I cherish the opportunity to support so many teens and young adults!
What’s next, what does the future have in store for you? Anything we should keep an eye out for?
The future is bright with Jennifer Close Coaching as I expand my services as a life coach to more college age students and their journey toward finding the career that will provide them with the most happiness.
How has being a mom helped you progress, personally or professionally? How has it challenged you?
I have two children, ages 6 and 4 and I feel so blessed to be their mom! Being a mother has put things into perspective. Life is short and you have to do what makes you happy. Having children helps prioritize the important things in life and for me, that is family. I am very much type A person and whatever I am doing, I need to have control and I need to do it well. This has been a struggle at times wanting to be the very best mental health professional and the very best mom to my kids. I have learned to accept that I simply can not do everything. As a working mom, I am still working on finding the balance that works best for our family.
Favorite CT season/weather?
Without a doubt, my favorite season is the fall. Nothing beats fall in New England with the changing leaves and the cooler weather. We love all the local fall activities like apple and pumpkin picking and the CT fall fairs. We also love to celebrate Halloween in our house, especially my son, so we go all out with decor and festivities!
Favorite hang out spot in Milford? Either with or without kids!
It is so hard to pick my favorite local hangout spot in Milford. I have a couple! For groups or events, I love Village Bistro. They are so hospitable, the food is delicious and the building is uniquely decorated by the owner. For date night, my husband and I have always enjoyed Bistro Basque or El Barrio. We love the ambiance and we love the variety of the food with the mixed menus and of course, the drinks! Although I may be biased, a great place on a sunny day with the kids is our family owned Dockside Brewery. We watched what was once my uncle’s idea of a brewery on the water, turn into the beautiful location it is today.
Everyday I remind myself that I want to make my kids proud. I try to exemplify kindness and model what it looks like to care for others. We are blessed to live in this beautiful town and community and I don’t want to take even one day for granted!
