Meet-A-Doctor, Dr. Alex Afshar, Founder and President of Vein Institute. Since opening the doors in 2008 in Newtown, Vein Institute now offers services in Milford, Shelton, & Fairfield as well. Working with both women & men, the team provides patients with the most advanced out-patient treatments that diagnoses, treats, and eliminates the pain & embarrassment caused by spider and varicose veins.
Dr. Afshar, can you tell us a little about your family and children? I have been blessed with three wonderful
children. I am the proud dad to my daughters Riana (22) and Elina (7) and son Milan (20).
Can you tell us one thing people would be surprised to know about you…I am a bit of a thrill seeker and enjoy high-risk sports, such as Motocross.
What’s the one thing you wish someone would have told you about fatherhood? I don’t think anyone can be truly 100% prepared for fatherhood, but I wish I had been told to have more patience. The inevitable curveballs that come with parenthood are best handled when approached with patience and understanding.
What is a favorite activity to do with your family? We enjoy boating on the lake. Connecticut is a great place for water sports. When the weather is nice, I love to go wakeboarding with my family.
Where is hour favorite spot in our area? Best thing about working in Milford and living in Connecticut? There’s a strong sense of “Milford Pride” that permeates the community. This is evident in the well-preserved historical sites and the active participation in local events and festivals. The combination of the historic feel, with the modern day businesses, gives Milford a very welcoming feel.
Best thing about being a dad? It is a privilege to watch your children learn and grow. I am honored to play a role in shaping the adults they will become.

Now on to all things related
Institute opened in Newtown in 2008 (and now with 3 additional offices throughout the state). Can you tell us a little bit more about your business and why you started it? Vein Institute specializes in minimally invasive, in-office procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of vein disease. I started the practice in 2008 in response to a need for Phlebology services in the community. The technological advances led to the minimally invasive treatment of vein disease in a safe office environment that feels like home.
You treat both men and women for varicose and spider veins, in addition to a variety of other services. Can you tell us how someone would know they need to see someone at The Vein Institute? Most people are familiar with varicose and spider veins, which are the obvious signs of vein disease, but they may not realize that pain, cramping, and discomfort in the legs are also signs of the disease. Patient’s who experience Restless Leg Syndrome and swelling should also be evaluated by a vein specialist. If left untreated, vein disease can lead to more serious health problems like ulcers.
What as an appointment like at your office? I am fortunate to have a dedicated team of professionals working with me at Vein Institute. Our patient service team, nurses, and vascular technologists all play an important role in your care. We work together to evaluate your concerns, diagnosis utilizing ultrasound, and treat with state-of-the-art, minimally invasive technology. All our treatments are done in the office, and you can resume normal activities right away.

Dr. Afshar from the Vein Institute shares his top tips for healthy legs:
- Elevate those legs! Whenever possible, put your feet up to improve circulation.
- Move around! Even short walks can make a big difference. Avoid prolonged sitting or standing.
- Hydration is key! Drink plenty of water to keep your blood flowing smoothly.
- Consider compression stockings. These can provide extra support and reduce swelling.
